There is no such thing as a mini, toy or other variation of the Australian Shepherd. A Miniature American Shepherd is now a recognized breed by the AKC but is not an Australian Shepherd. Anyone selling Doodles and Toys and claiming they are Aussies are being misleading. These dogs are just mutts and you'd be just as well off adopting from a local rescue organization. The standard Australian Shepherd that we own and breed is the only one accepted by the Australian Shepherd Club of America, official parent club for the breed.
If you don't consider dog hair as both a fashion accessory and a condiment, an Aussie might not be right for you! It's been said that "Aussies don't shed, they emit magical fibers of joy and love!"
The breed has a double coat – the outer layer and the inner layer. The outer layer is weatherproof, whilst the inner layer provides insulation. The texture of the coat is considered to be medium, straight to slightly wavy and weather resistant. The coat colors of the Aussie are black, blue merle, red merle, solid red with or without white markings and solid red or black with or without white and tan markings. Though they shed quite a bit, they only need minimal regular grooming of just a brushing.
Aussies need exercise on a daily basis, preferably combining both mental and physical challenges. Games such as agility, herding trials, and flying disc are strongly suggested. A long stroll daily, hikes or jogs, plus some training sessions at home will also help meet their needs for activity. Realize that it takes a lot of time and effort to keep the Aussie occupied. But if you are ready to train and give them plenty of exercise, then this dog breed is right for you.
